Eggshell membrane supplier: the criteria that matter

Two technical data sheets can carry the same heading, “eggshell membrane”, and describe two ingredients that have almost nothing in common. One is native, the other hydrolyzed. One was studied at 300 mg per day, the other at 450 or 500 mg. One is separated from the shell mechanically, the other goes through a chemical or enzymatic treatment. On a simple quote, none of this shows.

Choosing an eggshell membrane supplier means, first of all, checking that the ingredient you are buying matches the one that was studied, at the dose at which it was studied. Then come the analytical specifications, the process, the traceability of the shells, the regulatory status in your target countries and the supplier's ability to deliver the same quality, batch after batch. Here is the checklist we recommend applying, with the precise questions to ask.

Native or hydrolyzed: which membrane is your supplier talking about?

This is the first question, because it determines all the others. Native membrane retains its original structure. Hydrolyzed membrane has been broken down into smaller fragments, often to make it water-soluble. Both forms have been studied, but not at the same doses. Insist that the form be named unambiguously on the technical data sheet: “membrane extract” or “processed membrane” calls for one more question.

Is the recommended dose consistent with the published studies?

A serious supplier gives you a daily dose and the study that justifies it. It is up to you to check that this study concerns the same form of ingredient. A few reference points from randomized placebo-controlled trials, run on different eggshell membranes, none of which is Reggenerate®:

  • Minimally processed native membrane, 300 mg per day, 150 participants, 12 weeks: the primary endpoint (numeric pain rating scale) did not separate the groups, but the KOOS pain and activities of daily living scores improved from the first week (Kiers and Bult, 2020).
  • Eggshell membrane, 500 mg per day, 67 patients with knee osteoarthritis, 8 weeks: pain and stiffness significantly reduced compared with placebo at 10, 30 and 60 days; function and overall WOMAC score were not significant (Ruff et al., 2009).
  • Water-soluble hydrolyzed membrane, 450 mg per day, 88 adults, 12 weeks: gains observed in the normalized analysis only (Hewlings et al., 2019).
  • Two doses of eggshell membrane compared with a placebo: the authors describe a dose-dependent response, with the best results on pain in the high-dose group (Cánovas et al., 2022).

A 2024 meta-analysis bringing together seven randomized trials concludes to a significant improvement in the total WOMAC score, while calling for larger trials (García-Muñoz et al., 2024). The lesson for a buyer is simple. A dose only makes sense when backed by a study run on a comparable form. If your supplier cites a trial conducted on another membrane, they must say so, and you will not be able to present that result as your product's.

Which analytical specifications should you ask for?

Eggshell membrane is a matrix: its value lies in the simultaneous presence of several actives. But the supplier still has to characterize them. Here is what a complete specification sheet should cover:

  • Active profile: protein content, presence and types of collagen, glycosaminoglycans (including hyaluronic acid, glucosamine, chondroitin), with the analytical method used for each.
  • Physicochemical parameters: moisture, particle size, appearance, color. They matter directly for encapsulation, compression or incorporation into a gummy.
  • Microbiology: total plate count, yeasts and molds, Enterobacteriaceae, Salmonella, with the specification limits.
  • Contaminants: heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury), in line with the maximum levels set for food supplements by Regulation (EU) 2023/915, and residual solvents if the process uses any.

One piece of advice we give systematically: ask for certificates of analysis from three different batches, not just the theoretical sheet.

How is the membrane separated, and where do the shells come from?

The process determines what remains in the powder. Mechanical separation keeps the matrix as it is. A chemical or enzymatic process transforms it and may involve reagents or solvents whose absence will need to be verified at the end of the process. You need to know which one was chosen, because it affects composition, labeling and regulatory status.

As for the shells, ask about their origin, how they are collected and stored before processing, and whether each batch of powder can be linked to its batch of raw material. For a brand that communicates on upcycling, this is the foundation of a verifiable story.

Can the ingredient be marketed in your target countries?

Let's be honest, this is the point where conversations often become evasive. The status of an eggshell membrane depends on its form and its process: in the European Union, some processed membranes have obtained Novel Food authorizations specific to a process and an applicant. What applies to one ingredient therefore does not automatically apply to another. Ask, country by country, on what basis the ingredient is placed on the market and for the documentation that proves it.

Two other points to keep in mind. Egg is among the allergens that must be declared (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011). And eggshell membrane has no authorized health claim in Europe: your on-pack message will rely on authorized nutrients, such as vitamin C or manganese, in the exact wording of the EU register. Our comparison of joint supplement ingredients comes back to this point.

Quality, documentation, supply: what makes a good partner

You are choosing a partner for several years. Quality certifications (ISO, HACCP) provide a basis of trust. The documentation package should arrive without chasing: technical data sheet, specifications, CoA per batch, allergen declaration, study file with the form tested. Also ask about available volumes, lead times and the ability to keep up with a scale-up.

Formulation support, finally, saves months with your contract manufacturer. And for a small format, we frankly advise against any ingredient whose studied dose does not fit in the intended capsule or gummy: the formula would be underdosed compared with the studies.

The questions to ask your eggshell membrane supplier

This checklist works just as well for a local request for quotation as for an international call for tenders for an eggshell membrane supplier. It fits on one page and applies to every candidate in the same way.

What Circul'Egg brings to each criterion

We apply this checklist to ourselves. Here is what Reggenerate®, native eggshell membrane, brings on each point:

  • Form and process: a native, non-hydrolyzed membrane, separated from the shell by a 100% mechanical, solvent-free process.
  • Dose: 300 mg per day, the dose used in the trial on minimally processed native membrane by Kiers and Bult (2020). A clarification that matters: that trial, like those cited above, concerns another eggshell membrane, not Reggenerate®.
  • Actives: collagen (types I, V and X), elastin, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine and chondroitin, naturally present in the matrix.
  • Raw material: upcycled eggshells. Circul'Egg is a company from Brittany, based in Janzé.
  • Quality: ISO and HACCP certifications.
  • Allergen: egg, the only allergen to declare.
  • Dosage form: compatible with capsules, tablets, gummies, powders and bars, the 300 mg dose leaving room in small formats.
  • Support: if you want to save time on your launch, our ready-to-market range starts from this same base.

For quantified analytical specifications, certificates of analysis and regulatory status in your target countries, ask us exactly the questions in the table. It is the same standard you should hold all your suppliers to, us included. And if you are new to the category, our eggshell membrane guide for formulators details its composition.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use studies on another eggshell membrane in your sales case?

You can cite them to professionals to present the state of knowledge on the category, provided you specify the ingredient tested, the population, the dose and the duration. On the other hand, a result obtained on another membrane must never be presented as your product's. And on the label, only authorized claims apply.

How many batches should you request to evaluate a supplier?

At least three separate batches, ideally produced at different times. On a natural raw material, this is what reveals real consistency, far more than the specification sheet.

Which documents should you require before a first purchase?

Technical data sheet, specifications, CoA per batch, allergen declaration, valid quality certificates, study file with the form tested, and regulatory documentation for each target country.
